Phantogram members Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter have been friends since they were in middle school, when their hobbies included making prank calls and attempting skateboard maneuvers. These days, their activities take place on a slightly larger scale, as Phantogram’s dark electro-pop has been featured in TV shows like Teen Wolf, CSI and Shameless, and their most recent album, last year’s Voices, made it to No. 11 on the Billboard album charts.

That connection between the two band members, who share vocal, multi-instrumental and songwriting duties, has helped Phantogram go from a bedroom project in the duo’s hometown of Greenwich, N.Y., to an indie-pop powerhouse. In addition to creating their own music, Barthel and Carter have collaborated with rapper Big Boi of OutKast and indie-rock legends The Flaming Lips. Although the core of Phantogram is a duo, for live shows they’re augmented by a drummer and an additional guitarist/keyboardist, helping translate the layered sound of their studio recordings into a live setting. Barthel and Carter demonstrate that years of friendship have placed them perfectly in sync.
