In Lily Allen’s cheeky pop takedown “Sheezus,” the British singer cites all the big pop divas she wishes she could overthrow, including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Beyoncé and Rihanna, plus one new star: Lorde. Does the singer-songwriter from New Zealand really deserve to be mentioned alongside those pop icons? If her career so far is any indication, she certainly does.

Lorde made her stunning debut with the smash hit “Royals” last year when she was just 16 years old, turning the catchy, low-key song decrying pop-music materialism into a chart-topping hit in a dozen countries.

She followed that up by releasing her debut album Pure Heroine a few months later, garnering even more critical acclaim and launching subsequent hit singles “Tennis Court” and “Teams.” Unlike the other pop stars Allen challenges in “Sheezus,” Lorde shies away from over-the-top stage shows and outrageous outfits. Instead she writes and sings moody, atmospheric pop songs with undeniable hooks. If she can rack up two Grammys and numerous chart records before turning 18, Lorde clearly has what it takes to put those fancier divas on notice.
