Once upon a time, super-successful pop singer Katy Perry was just a teenage girl named Katy Hudson, an aspiring singer and songwriter who released a self-titled album of Christian rock under her given name in 2001. These days, nobody but the hard-core fans know about Katy Hudson, but when she re-emerged seven years later under the name Katy Perry, with a mainstream pop sound and the same strong voice and ear for a catchy hook, pretty soon everyone knew all about her.

Thanks to the success of cheeky, infectious singles “I Kissed a Girl,” “Hot N Cold” and “Waking Up in Vegas,” Perry went from also-ran Christian rocker to pop superstar with her 2008 album One of the Boys, which debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard album charts. And those three aforementioned songs all made the top 10 on the Billboard singles chart, with “I Kissed a Girl” hitting the top of the chart.

From there, Perry’s success only grew. Her second pop album, 2010’s Teenage Dream, produced a record-setting five No. 1 singles (“California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”), the most by a female artist from a single album and the most from any single album since Michael Jackson’s Bad in 1987. She performed in bigger and bigger venues with a more elaborate stage show, guest-starred on The Simpsons and How I Met Your Mother, hosted Saturday Night Live and released a theatrical documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me, chronicling her career and her successful California Dreams Tour.

At this point, Perry is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, and she shows no signs of slowing down. She released her third pop album, Prism, in October of last year, once again topping the album charts and spawning two No. 1 singles (“Roar” and “Dark Horse”) so far. Perry continues to co-write all of her own music, just as she did back in her teenage singer-songwriter days, and she’s a savvy businesswoman, too: She recently launched her own record label (her first signing, singer Ferras, is opening for her on her current tour), and she’s released three signature fragrances.

Perry embarked on her Prismatic World Tour in May, with an itinerary set to send her around the globe. Although Perry has said that she wanted to make the show “less cartoony” than her previous tour, it’s still a wondrous spectacle, just as intricate and immersive as her fans have come to expect. With a set list that spans all three of her albums, the show features Perry backed by dancers and running through a series of wardrobe changes, including a butterfly-patterned dress and her “birthday suit.”

“Loud, garish, camp and never less than uproariously entertaining, it’s a show designed to conquer the planet,” said Rolling Stone of the Prismatic World Tour. Perry has pretty much already conquered the planet over the last several years, and this tour is just one more step in her continued reign.
