It’s a nice atmosphere, this pub, with a long bar running along one wall and around the wood-fired oven and stacked keg installation. At The Pub at Monte Carlo, you can pretty much see a TV from any table. Sports and beer, could you do better?

For your meal, or as your meal, start with a pint—or better yet a flight, where you can compare and contrast four separate brews. There’s an enormous selection, with 120 unique craft beers on draft, and anywhere from 200 to 300 beers available, depending on what’s on the market. You can try a more traditional beer flight in 5-ounce tasters, organized by categories like local brews, Belgian-style or American craft, or you might want something really different, like a fruit beer flight. Timmermans Timms Strawberry and an incredibly delicious Lindemans Framboise may appeal to even the most casual of beer fans. The pub also has a good selection of spiked milkshakes and cocktails to choose from.

The oversize pretzels are wood-fired and come with Dijon and smoked Gouda. The Gouda clings to the pretzel and doesn’t drip off like you might have experienced with some thin faux-cheese products at a mall outlet. A spinach and artichoke dip is blended with cream cheese and cheddar. It’s a perfect consistency for dipping the abundance of tortilla chips and garlic crostini, and you’ll undoubtedly run across plenty of nuggets of flavorful artichoke.

The Pub’s flatbreads are a little heartier than some others you might have had. The garden vegetable sports a crust with a nice balance between chewy and crisp, with finely chopped red onions, mushrooms and red peppers arranged across the dish.

There’s also a solid range of American bar foods, like the prime rib dip, served with a classic au jus and several monster onion rings. You’ll also find such goodies as Goose Island Matilda-braised short ribs, cooked with Goose Island’s Belgian-style pale ale, and the Butcher’s Burger, half-bacon and half-beef, accented with a bacon sauce.

Desserts go from cheesecake to Pub s’mores, a frozen concoction layered with graham crust and ganache, accented by rich chocolate sauce and toasted marshmallow. And remember that spiked milkshake you were considering starting with? If you decided against it, good! Order a beer float instead. Particularly good is one created with framboise and ice cream, topped with whipped cream and a little coulis. It will take you back to the days of slurping a cone and drinking a brew nearly simultaneously, but it’s just so much better here.
