Strangely enough, even while you’re in Vegas, your favorite team just keeps on playing. So being on the road shouldn’t exclude you from taking in the game and it certainly shouldn’t prevent you from grabbing a good meal as man cannot survive on competition alone; man also needs sustenance.

With the two in mind, the fine folks at MGM Grand have opened Tap just off their casino floor.

The spacious room is adorned with PAC-12 memorabilia—we are on the West Coast, of course—with what seems like a thousand TVs affixed to walls, the bar and any other surface appearing remotely stationary. With this many, you’re certain to find nearly any event you’re looking for. Peruse the drinks menu with delight; there are about 24 varieties of beer, ale and cider on tap, with plenty of bottled domestic, craft and imports if you’re not feeling drafty.

As would be expected from a sports-themed restaurant, the food menu delivers selections that easily accommodate the game of your choice. Your meal should begin with the pregame portion of the menu where appetizers abound with which to satiate your hungry crew.

While a seemingly simple menu selection, the pretzels and cheese are outrageously good. Horseradish cheddar served alongside the soft sourdough pretzel bites delivers a hint of sharpness; you’ll want a side of it for everything you order. The Midwest gets the spotlight with Wisconsin beer-battered fried cheese accompanied by ranch dressing for dipping. Hot dogs are given a pair of preparations: braised bacon corn dogs and Franks in a Blanket, full-size versions of the cocktail party classic with swaddled, house-made pork dogs. Both are a fine take on the ballpark classic.

Once you’ve pregamed, move onto heartier selections. Seek out Tap’s steak chili with balanced and flavorful heat; order it in the sweet corn bread bowl for an even tastier treat. Or instead, check out a riff on a childhood favorite with the Tap sloppy joe. However, I’m certain your mother never prepared a beef brisket version with a pilsner-laden sloppy joe sauce. Sometimes memories are made to be improved on.

A trio of pint-size sandwich options offers to take you on a trip across the U.S.: a miniature cheese-stuffed Juicy Lucy of Minneapolis fame, sharp Buffalo chicken sandwiches originated from the N.Y. city of the same name and a sandwich needing no introduction—the Philadelphia cheesesteak in the guise of Little Phillys. Little Phillys are particularly memorable, with shaved ribeye delivered atop miniature Italian hoagie rolls. Partner them with an order of well-spiced, thick-cut French fries to complete your meal.

For dessert, an adult Guinness chocolate shake awaits, prepared with cookies-and-cream ice cream and Guinness-laced fluff. Classic ingredients are deep fried in the s’mores. And because TAP excels in all things pretzels, try the chocolate-covered pretzels rolled in toffee peanuts and served with a caramel dipping sauce. Yes, they’re as good as they sound.
